Affected pipe – What will happen to the affected pipe?

On May 28, under the oversight of PHMSA and the Unified Command, excavation and removal of the affected section of pipe was completed. The affected portion of pipe was securely packaged to preserve its condition and is currently being transported to a secure, independent facility for an independent third-party analysis and investigation. PHMSA personnel will maintain chain of custody of the pipe at all times to ensure the integrity of their investigation.

Following removal of the pipe, under the work plan approved by PHMSA and the Unified Command, Plains will remove any oiled soil remaining under the pipeline and repair the pipeline.
